Malaysian police yesterday attacked a peaceful protest against fuel price hikes in Kuala Lumpur. 54 activists were arrested, including leaders of the Malaysian Socialist Party (PSM) chairperson Nasir Hashim and secretary-general S. Arutchelvan. Urgent solidarity action is needed.

Two prominent left-wing shop stewards from Asturias were sentenced to three years of jail, after a trial in which they were left completely defenceless. This is an attack on the labour movement as a whole, with the clear aim of criminalizing and de-legitimising the struggle of workers. We appeal for solidarity to all left-wing political and trade union organisations to stop this attack and prevent what would be a dangerous precedent for future struggles.

At 6am on 22 December 2005 a number of Information Ministry personnel acting under orders from the Tehran prosecutor, a judge named Mortazavi, produced a search warrant at the home of Mr Mansour Ossanlou (the leader of the Steering Committee of the Vahed Bus Company Trade Union). After carrying out a search they arrested Mr Ossanlou and took him to an undisclosed place.
